Program Overview

The department was established in 1970 to instill students with the basic and professional knowledge of economics and business. Combining theory and practice, our curriculum is designed to equip students with the capability to work for business firms, the government, and other institutions, or advance to graduate level studies. In 2001, the Ph.D. program was launched and is the only o doctoral economics program in central Taiwan.

There are 18 full-time faculty members in the department. Fifteen of them hold a Ph.D. degree. The department currently offers undergraduate, master’s and Ph.D. programs and has approximately 720 undergraduate and 38 graduate students.

Economics is an interesting and practical subject. It studies how individuals, households, governments and business sectors can effectively use limited resources through markets and systems. It involves an individual’s development and career plan, competition and conflicts among different groups and a nation’s economic growth and social problems, as well as the role and functions of the government.

Thus, our curriculum is designed to help students develop a set of thinking and tools that they can use to analyze and solve real world problems. In addition to the core courses such as Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Econometrics, students are required to take professional courses such as Public Choice, International Finance, International Trade, Financial Markets, Industrial Economics, Institutional Economics, Economic Growth and Development and Chinese Economy.

The department also offers the Economics-Law Program, which combines the two fields of economics and law.

The department invites 8 to 10 outside speakers each semester to present papers at the department’s weekly seminar so that faculty and graduate students are frequently exposed to new ideas.

  • Possess the basic knowledge of economics: Each student is able to identify and discuss economic problems employing knowledge of basic economic theories.

  • Possess the ability to understand and expound the economic problems in reality.
